MyHeritage In Color™ – a new and easy groundbreaking feature to automatically colorize black and white photos – now FREE through April 23rd

Colorize your old family photos and see your ancestors in a whole new light with MyHeritage In Color™. To use this amazing feature, click on any black and white photo you already have, then click Colorize. Your original photos will not be changed. You can also upload black and white photos and colorize them. We've made it easy to share colorized photos with your family and friends.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, MyHeritage is providing FREE and unlimited access to MyHeritage In Color from March 23 to April 23, so that people everywhere can join in the fun of colorizing their black and white photos. Ordinarily only 10 photos can be colorized by users who do not have a Complete plan, but now, you can colorize as many photos as you’d like for free.

Colorizing photos is the perfect activity for anyone who is isolated at home. We invite everyone to pull out their family photo albums, colorize their photos, and start reminiscing. Over the coming month, anyone who shares their colorized photos on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram with the hashtag #ColorBeatsCoronavirusBlues and tags @MyHeritage will enter a weekly draw. Each week we’ll select one lucky winner who will receive a free MyHeritage Complete subscription!

I just took the new MyHeritage In Color™ for a test drive and I LOVE IT!  While not all the colors are accurate, it really does help bring my old family photos to life!  Here’s an example of my great-grandfather John Ralph Austin (1896 – 1976) with his wife Therese McGinnes with her sisters (taken about 1950 at the farmhouse in Grahamsville, New York).

How MyHeritage In Color™ Works

“The photo colorization technology that powers this feature was licensed by MyHeritage from DeOldify, created by software engineers Jason Antic and Dana Kelley. An early version of the DeOldify technology was contributed by Antic to the public domain in November 2018. Antic and Kelley updated it in May 2019. Since then, they’ve continued to improve and fine-tune the technology commercially. Their latest version produces colorized photos of unprecedented quality and is currently exclusive to MyHeritage.

We believe this is the best technology in the world for colorizing black and white photos. The technology was trained using millions of photos, and has developed an understanding of our world and its colors. The results are more realistic and of superior quality to those generated by other automatic colorization tools currently available. The black and white photos remain intact and are not changed by the colorization process, which produces new photos alongside the original ones.

MyHeritage In Color™ works on all photos — even faded photos that still have some color in them. The colors you’ll see in your photos are simulated automatically by the colorization algorithms — there is no manual retouching involved.”
