I’m so excited about this upcoming virtual event that is part scavenger hunt and part escape room! On Wednesday 1 February 2023 at 7:00 pm EST / 6:00 pm CST, I will be hosting Genealogy Escape Room℠: The Case of Sam Foster: Who’s Behind Those Foster Grants! This is a FREE ONLINE GENEALOGY EVENT … scroll down to learn how you can participate!
What is a Genealogy Escape Room℠?
I developed this concept at the start of the COVID pandemic in March 2020 when I realized that a) in person escape rooms were moving to a virtual format and b) the genealogy community needed more than just a 45 minute webinar with a 15 minute Q&A segment. My followers and colleagues told me they wanted “participatory” and “actionable” genealogy education.
So …. Imagine you are trapped in an archive and the only way out is to solve a series of genealogy research puzzles. Are you up to the challenge? Are you ready for Genealogy Escape Room℠?
Based on the popular escape room concept, Genealogy Escape Room℠ turns the typical webinar format upside down! Participants can download a Case Review File used to solve a series of online research tasks BEFORE the live webinar takes place. The webinar is the “reveal” where a step-by-step review of each puzzle, task, and clue all the way to the final “key” to open the door. Genealogy methodology concepts will be summarized before announcing who escaped first!
The Case of Sam Foster: Who’s Behind Those Foster Grants
Sunglasses can often make a person appear enigmatic and mysterious. Such is the case of Sam Foster, co-founder of the Foster Grant company, noted manufacturer of sunglasses based in Leominster, Massachusetts. Come join us for a fun evening of “watch as it happens” genealogy research, pick up some new research skills, and learn more about Sam Foster.
Accidentally, you are locked in at the Leominster Public Library after hours. It seems that you fell asleep in a cubicle while researching the history of sunglasses. Your current research subject is Sam Foster, who along with William Grant founded the Foster Grant company in Leominster and helped popularize sunglasses.
You can complete your research on Sam Foster by answering a set of 17 questions related to the genealogy and family history of Sam Foster and his family. And then attend the “reveal” on Wednesday 1 February 2023. There is NO REQUIREMENT to do the research … you can also just attend the webinar and learn more about the genealogy research methodology used to find out more about Sam Foster and his family.

Sharpen those research skills by researching NOW and then participate in the “actionable genealogy education” event on Wednesday, February 1st! NOTE: You are allowed to use ANY online sites for GENEALOGY research; most clues can be found on Ancestry at https://ancestry.com and FamilySearch at https://familysearch.org. And if you “cheat” by simply using Google to find information, you are only cheating yourself out of an amazing story of an amazing man.

You will receive an email confirmation and a reminder to join the webinar on February 1st. During the webinar you’ll have access to the genealogy research log I used to locate information about Sam Foster and syllabus materials listing all the “answers” and the research methodology used.
