Hot DNA Deals on mtDNA & Y-DNA Tests: FamilyTreeDNA Summer Sale 2025

Hot DNA Deals on mtDNA & Y-DNA Tests: FamilyTreeDNA’s Summer Sale offers up to $50 off DNA test kits, giving genealogists a chance to save money while unearthing new family history clues. Click HERE to start shopping!

Genealogy friends, are you ready for high temps and low prices on DNA tests? This summer, FamilyTreeDNA (FTDNA) is turning up the heat with a Summer Sale 2025 that’s hard to resist. We genealogists love a good bargain almost as much as a new ancestor, and FTDNA’s sale is the perfect combo of both – budget-friendly DNA tests that can help break down those brick-wall ancestors without breaking the bank.

Hot DNA Deals: What’s the Buzz? – FamilyTreeDNA Summer Sale 2025 Overview

Summer Sale Details: The FamilyTreeDNA Summer Sale is on now, and it’s offering up to $50 USD off on a variety of DNA test kits. That means big savings on tests that can advance your genealogy and family history research. The sale runs for a limited time – now through August 31, 2025 (mark your calendars, because you don’t want to miss it). Think of it as a summer genealogical harvest where you reap the DNA data you need at a fraction of the usual cost.

Test Types on Sale: This isn’t just the basic autosomal test sale (though the Family Finder autosomal test is indeed on sale) – FTDNA’s unique lineup includes specialized tests for your direct maternal line (mtDNA) and direct paternal line (Y-DNA). In fact, FamilyTreeDNA is the only major DNA testing company that offers dedicated Y-DNA and mtDNA kits for genealogists. That’s right – they’re the only game in town if you want to directly test those father’s-father’s-father or mother’s-mother’s-mother lines, which is exactly why this sale matters. FTDNA also has bundle deals (combining multiple tests for extra savings) and even discounts on upgrades if you’ve tested with them before. In short, there’s something for everyone: whether you’re just getting started with DNA or you’re a seasoned genetic genealogist looking to expand into new tests, this sale has you covered.

“High Temps & Low Prices!” 🔥 This sale definitely lives up to that motto. It’s the genealogy equivalent of a summer blockbuster – exciting, limited-time, and everyone’s talking about it. So let’s break down the specifics of what’s on offer and why you might want each test. (Trust me, by the end you’ll be itching to test all the things – and with these prices, you actually can do so without feeling guilty!)

Hot DNA Deals: Show Me the Savings – Sale Pricing & Test Options 🏷️

One of the best parts of this sale is seeing those prices drop. Here’s a clear breakdown of FamilyTreeDNA Summer Sale 2025 offerings (with the sale prices vs. regular prices), so you can plan your budget and your strategy. Whether you’re a frugal genealogist (aren’t we all?) or just love getting more for less, these deals are worth a look:

FamilyTreeDNA Summer Sale: Family Finder

Family Finder (Autosomal DNA)$39 (on sale, down from $79). Who is it for? Genetic males and females – anyone looking for a broad ancestry test. Why you want it: This test covers all your family lines and is best for finding cousins within about 5 generations on both sides of your tree. It provides an ethnicity breakdown (myOrigins) and tools like a chromosome browser and ancientOrigins to see connections to ancient populations. At just $39, it’s an excellent entry point if you’ve never done DNA testing, or a great add-on if you tested at another company and want to fish in FTDNA’s pond for new matches. (Also, $39 is half off – talk about bang for your buck!)

FamilyTreeDNA Summer Sale: mtDNA

mtDNA (Full Mitochondrial Sequence)$129 (on sale, down from $159). Who is it for? Both males and females can take this, since we all have mtDNA (though remember, only females pass it on). Why you want it: This is the full sequence maternal line test, meaning it checks all the markers in your mitochondrial DNA for the greatest detail. It will assign you a refined haplogroup (so you’ll learn the deep origin of your mother’s line) and you’ll get a list of mtDNA matches in FTDNA’s database. Use this to verify maternal line connections and discover if someone from halfway around the world shares your maternal ancestor. It’s also useful if you’re trying to differentiate between two potential maternal ancestors – matching someone with one surname vs. another could point you in the right direction. At $129, this is a solid discount for a test that normally costs ~$160. It’s still one of the more expensive tests, but the value for dedicated maternal research is huge, and now is the time to grab it while it’s ~$30 off.

FamilyTreeDNA Summer Sale: Y-DNA

Y-DNA – 37 Marker Test$89 (on sale, down from $119). Who is it for? This test is for genetic males (or for females to buy for a male relative in the line they want to trace). Why you want it: The 37-marker Y-DNA test is FTDNA’s entry-level paternal line exam. It’s a great start for exploring your surname line; 37 markers can often confirm close relationships on the paternal side (think within several hundred years). If you match another tester on 37/37 markers, you very likely share a common ancestor in genealogical time. Even a 35/37 or 34/37 match can be very useful evidence of a connection. This test will give you a basic Y-DNA haplogroup as well, and you can join surname and haplogroup projects to see how you fit in with others. At $89, this is a friendly price to dip your toes into Y-DNA. If you’ve been curious about your last name’s origins or have a hunch that your line connects to another family, this could provide the proof. Tip: If you’re a female genealogist researching your paternal line, consider recruiting your dad, brother, or a male cousin who carries the surname to take this test. It’s a team effort – you finance the kit (on sale!), and they provide the DNA sample. Everyone wins with the discoveries that follow. 😁

Y-DNA – “Big Y-700” (Advanced Paternal Test)$399 (on sale, down from $449). Who is it for? Genetic males who want the full Y-DNA experience, or genealogists who have done the basics and are ready for a deep dive. Why you want it: Big Y-700 is the mother (father?) of all Y-DNA tests. It not only looks at 700+ STR markers (compared to 37 or 111 in lower tests) but also scans thousands of SNPs across the Y chromosome, which can place you very finely on the Y-DNA haplotree (the tree of global paternal lineages). This test can identify new mutations unique to your line and give extremely granular detail on how you relate to others in your surname or haplogroup project. It’s ideal for those doing one-name studies, researching clan origins, or just wanting to get as specific as possible about their paternal heritage. At $399, it’s still an investment, but the $50 off helps, and if you’re serious about using DNA for genealogy, Big Y is unmatched in its scope. One strategy some use is: start with a Y-37 or Y-111 to see if you get matches, and then upgrade to Big Y during a sale if you need more detail – speaking of which, upgrades are also usually on sale now (more below).

Other Y-DNA Levels: While the sale highlights the above, note that FTDNA also has a 111-marker test (Y-111) and sometimes sells Y-67 (though 67 is often phased out in favor of 111). If available, those will be on sale too (e.g., Y-111 might be around ~$199 on sale, down from $249, based on past sales). If you’re not ready for Big Y but want more than 37 markers, a Y-111 test on sale could be a sweet spot for both price and informational value. Check FTDNA’s website for the exact pricing on those intermediary tests during the sale, as they will also reflect discounts (the principle of “up to $50 off” applies – usually the more expensive the test, the bigger the absolute discount).

FamilyTreeDNA Summer Sale: Bundles

Bundles and Combo Kits – FTDNA encourages deeper exploration by offering bundle deals in this sale. For example, you might see a bundle like Family Finder + mtDNA, or Family Finder + Y-DNA at a combined price that’s lower than buying each separately. Bundles are perfect if you’re ready to tackle multiple questions at once – say, you want an autosomal test for cousin matching and a Y-DNA test for your surname line. By bundling, you save extra (and often also save on shipping because they’ll ship all kits together). Another bundle example could be Y-DNA + mtDNA, which would arm a male tester with tools to explore both parents’ direct lines. Keep an eye on the “View bundle deals” section on FTDNA’s site – it will list all available combinations and their sale pricing. Bundle discounts vary, but every little bit helps when you’re a genealogist on a budget. As FTDNA’s promo says, “Discover and Save More!” by taking a deeper dive with bundled tests.

Upgrades for Existing Customers – Already have a kit with FamilyTreeDNA? Good news: the sale isn’t just for new kits. Upgrades are often included in the summer sale, meaning if you have, say, an older Y-DNA test (like 37 markers) you can upgrade to 111 markers or even Big Y-700 at a discounted rate. The same goes for mtDNA – if you had done the mtDNA “HVR” test years ago, you can upgrade to the full sequence on sale. FTDNA allows you to order these through your account without needing a new sample in most cases. So check your FTDNA account: you might see sale pricing to level-up your existing tests. This is super cost-effective because you pay only the difference for more data, often at a lower price than that difference would normally be. For example, upgrading a Y-37 to a Y-111 might be cheaper now than at any other time. Don’t leave potential information on the table – get the whole story from your DNA if you can. (After all, how many times have we said, “I wish I had asked Grandma more questions when she was still here”? 🕰️ In the DNA sense, upgrading ensures you’ve asked all the questions your sample can answer.)

Sale Deadline Reminder: All these prices and deals are temporary. The Summer Sale is slated to end by August 31, 2025, at 11:59 pm PDT (just like previous years’ sales), unless of course FTDNA decides to extend it a bit (which sometimes happens, but don’t count on it). Procrastination and genealogy don’t mix well – just like you wouldn’t put off scanning those old family photos until they fade, you don’t want to miss a sale and pay more later. So, figure out which tests you need, and click HERE to snag them while the discount lasts. Your future self (and your wallet) will thank you!
