Elephind Shutdown: FREE CHEAT SHEET Historical Newspapers - 10 Tips for Genealogy

Why are genealogists so attracted to historical newspapers? Often, in the absence of official governmental documents such as vital records, newspapers can help establish and prove basic birth, marriage, and death information about our ancestors. In addition, a newspaper listing, such as an obituary, can be a starting point for further research and assist in generating research “to-do” list ideas.

Newspapers Sale: Tips for Researching on Newspapers.com™

  • Try using quotation marks around names or phrases to narrow search results (e.g., “James Smith”). This will give you results where those words appear next to each other on the newspaper page.
  • Don’t forget to clip articles as you find them!
  • Check for nicknames and spelling variations. James, Jim, and Jimmy might all be ways a family member appeared in the paper.
  • Research grandparents, siblings, cousins, and other family members. Even if your dad isn’t mentioned in an article, his family members might be.
  • Research places of business and home addresses. These can help you uncover valuable details about your relative’s career and community.

Newspapers Sale: Clip Articles, Obituaries, Photos, and more
