Don’t Be Left Behind! MyHeritage to Discontinue FREE DNA Data Uploads on December 1st
Summary: MyHeritage DNA now allows the free upload of 23andMe v5 as well as Living DNA test results to the MyHeritage site; and starting December 1st, 2018, MyHeritage will begin charging a fee for DNA test data uploads from other vendors. Click HERE to upload now!
So this is why you should do the FREE UPLOAD to MyHeritage DNA NOW . . .
“Effective December 1st, 2018, DNA Matching will remain free for uploaded DNA data, but unlocking additional DNA features (for example, ethnicity estimate, chromosome browser, and some others) will require an extra payment for DNA files uploaded after this date.”
“All DNA data that was uploaded to MyHeritage in the past, and all DNA data that is uploaded now and prior to December 1, 2018, will continue to enjoy full access to all DNA features for free. These uploads will be grandfathered in and will remain free.”
If you are not familiar with the practice, most DNA vendors (at least the “Big 5” which are 23andMe, AncestryDNA, Family Tree DNA, Living DNA and MyHeritage DNA) allow you to download your raw DNA test data. Then for many sites (except for 23andMe and AncestryDNA), you can “upload” that data and look for DNA matches among that site’s users who have tested their DNA. MyHeritage allows FREE UPLOADS (while some like Family Tree DNA charge as much as $19 USD).

Why You Should Upload Your DNA Test Data to MyHeritage DNA
Many DNA experts encourage genealogists and family historians to use the “fish in many ponds” approach when it comes to looking for DNA matches. MyHeritage DNA is a great pond to fish in! Here are the two main reasons why you should upload your DNA test data from another company to MyHeritage DNA:
- “Ethnicity Estimate – a comprehensive breakdown of your unique DNA composition. You will discover where your heritage originated from and how much each ethnicity is part of your ancestral origins, and even view the main life events of your direct ancestors on the Ethnicity map.”
- “DNA Matches – This technology compares data from autosomal DNA tests results and family trees to identify matches between users that share genetic sequences and indicate a family relationship.”

Recent Changes at MyHeritage DNA
There are several recent changes with MyHeritage DNA, including:
23andMe / Living DNA Data Uploads
You can now upload 23andMe v5 (which is a later version of 23andMe test results) as well as Living DNA (the UK-based DNA testing company). Click HERE to read the recent article New: MyHeritage supports 23andMe v5 and Living DNA uploads dated September 12, 2018 at the MyHeritage blog.
Shared Ancestral Places
MyHeritage DNA now displays Shared Ancestral Places for every match. “Shared Ancestral Places refer to towns, countries, or U.S. states that appear in your family tree as well as in the family trees of your DNA Matches, where birth or death events of your ancestors (and those of your DNA Matches’ ancestors) took place. These places are identified going back up to 10 generations and can play a vital role in family history research.” Click HERE to read the recent article New Feature: Shared Ancestral Places for DNA Matches dated November 12, 2018 at the MyHeritage blog.
