Chinese Exclusion Era Records – Enjoy FREE ACCESS at Ancestry!
Chinese Exclusion Era Records: Look into a complex historical era in Ancestry’s collection of free records from the Chinese Exclusion Era.
This year marks 100 years since the Chinese Exclusion Act was enacted in Canada. We have several indexed collections of records from both Canada and the U.S. during this era that are free for anyone to view on the Ancestry® platform.
In the mid‑to‑late‑19th century, a large number of Chinese immigrants came to the United States and Canada searching for new opportunities. As the economy shifted over time, anti‑Chinese sentiment grew, and both countries implemented Chinese Exclusion Acts to prohibit further immigration and to constrain those people of Chinese descent already living there.
Those already living in the Americas were forced to register as immigrants under the penalty of a $500 fine and a year in jail. Many were separated from their families in China with little to no hope of reunion. Now, however, those records are available to search and hopefully shed light on their untold stories.
