Free Access to Marriage Records at MyHeritage! Marriage & Divorce Records

Marriage certificates represent one of the key primary sources for family information, typically being issued the same day as a marriage takes place. In some cases, religious-based marriage documents exist too, but the civil record of the marriage has always been required.

Marriage certificates vary in content depending upon when and where the marriage took place, but usually they contain: brides’ and grooms’ names, ages, places of birth or recent residences, and number of marriage. In some cases the documents will have the names of the bride and the grooms’ parents, and address of residence after the wedding. Divorce records include similar details, as well as date of divorce, names of children and possibly the reason for dissolution. These can be valuable clues for continuing family tree research. Records in this category can include indexes that can help you request copies from vital records keepers, and in some cases the images of actual records.

Marriage records are windows into the heartwarming moments that mark the beginnings of new family branches. They typically reveal names, birth dates, places of birth, and residences of the bride and groom, often extending to details about their parents or the witnesses, who might be close family friends or relatives.

Adding to the spirit of love this season, our research team uncovered a fascinating trend in baby naming. Did you know the baby name Love is gaining popularity across the US?

The team at MyHeritage dove into public records and discovered that last year, Love made it to the top 1000 most popular names for the first time since 1893! That’s right, over a century ago, Love wasn’t just a word for affection but also a cherished baby boy’s name. Its highest peak back then was in 1902, ranking at number 838. With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, it seems like love really is in the air, and now, more than ever, it’s making its way into the names of our newest generation.

This Valentine’s Day, as you explore your ancestors’ love stories through marriage records, consider the lasting impact of love — not just as an emotion, but as a name passed down through generations.

Don’t miss this opportunity to uncover the romantic beginnings that shaped your family. Start searching now, and let us know what captivating stories you find!
