More Genealogy Tip of the Day: My Review

A reference, a read … a valuable resource indeed!

I always enjoyed the popular Genealogy Tip of the Day blog by genealogist Michael John Neill and found the content not just interesting but useful for my own research as well. But blogs just aren’t practical as handy reference tools. That’s why I was excited to hear that Neill had just published More Genealogy Tip of the Day in Amazon Kindle format. The book contains useful, practical advice on approaching difficult genealogy research situations. After diving into just a few pages, I was re-energized to tackle some of my own family history head-scratchers.

Now, I know what you’re thinking: “Kindle? But I’m a die-hard paper sniffer!” I hear you. But trust me, with my vision playing hide-and-seek and the magical search function of the Kindle, More Genealogy Tip of the Day has quickly become my go-to genealogy resource.

Here’s a brief overview of what I believe are the major benefits of the book:

  • Topic organization. At first glance, the topic headings might seem as random as socks from the dryer. But this casual, down-home style is exactly what makes Neill’s advice so accessible and relatable. The tips are straightforward and just make sense. Plainly, the tips just make sense.
  • A casual read, but beware …. Yes, More Genealogy Tip of the Day is a reference tool, but it’s also a dangerously engaging read. One minute you’re flipping through tips, the next you’re knee-deep in your own family research, thinking, “Why didn’t I think of that?” It’s the genealogy equivalent of “just one more episode” on Netflix.
  • Methodology matters. Don’t let the laid-back tone fool you—Neill’s book is rooted in solid genealogical research methods. It’s like sneaking veggies into a picky eater’s nuggets; you’re getting all the good stuff without even realizing it. More Genealogy Tip of the Day is perfect for family history researchers who say that don’t want to “follow all those silly rules and procedures.”
  • Utilize the Search function in Kindle. To truly get the most out of More Genealogy Tip of the Day, make sure you search for topics such as “census” or “affidavit” and other genealogy-related terminology when using it as a reference tool. It’s like having a genealogy guru on speed dial.

Conclusion: A Tip Jar That’s Always Full of Good Sense

Advice is autobiographical when you think about it, right? And that’s certainly the case with More Genealogy Tip of the Day by Michael John Neill. The challenges Neill has faced are likely to mirror your own, making his advice not just relatable, but downright indispensable. This book is a must-have for family historians, whether you’re just starting out or you’ve been climbing the family tree for decades.

More Genealogy Tip of the Day by Michael John Neill is highly recommended for genealogy newbies and seasoned researchers alike. I bet you’ll want to add it to your library of genealogy go-to’s, ready for when you hit that inevitable brick wall or encounter a mysterious ancestor.

More Genealogy Tip of the Day: Description

This is the follow-up companion to the first Genealogy Tip of the Day book.

Genealogy can be confusing and sometimes what the family historian needs is something short and to-the-point that can help them get their research back on track. That’s the intent of “Genealogy Tip of the Day.”

Long-time genealogist Michael John Neill uses his thirty years of research experience to remind readers of things they had forgotten, make them aware of things they did not know, and encourage them to increase their research and analytical skills. This is not a typical how-to book that has a chapter for each content topic. Topics are spread throughout the book. Tips are based on actual research, actual families, and actual problems. Each day’s tip is meant to be a relatively short read, is engaging, accurate, and occasionally funny.

Tip of the Day can be read front-to-back or browsed through at the reader’s whim. Tips are about genealogical sources, pitfalls, and procedures based on Michael’s extensive experience researching ancestors in the United States and abroad. Tips are practical, easy-to-understand, and applicable to those with ancestors in a variety of locations. Tips have been edited for clarity and updated when necessary. Any content that was time-sensitive has been removed. What’s left is research advice and suggestions with some humor thrown in.
