You’ve spent years gathering genealogy data, but how secure is it?
Today is World Backup Day and let me ask you this: when was the last time you backed up your genealogy data?
Be honest with yourself right now: when was the last time you backed up your genealogy data? If you didn’t have your computer, laptop, or mobile phone right, what data would you lose? How long would it take you to reconstruct it? Where would you go to get information? Your genealogy research data is an investment reflecting the time and effort you’ve spent tracing your roots. Like any other investment, it should be safe and secure for future use.
Many of you know I’m a big advocate of the 3-2-1 Backup Plan! Basically I make sure I have 3 backups, using 2 different media, and 1 backup MUST be offsite, either physically or in the cloud.
I suffered a data loss. I turned off the syncing feature of Dropbox on my desktop to gain more processing speed. I kept saying I would turn it back on. And then the hard drive failed on my desktop computer. I lost two weeks’ worth of writing and research. Gone!
So now I use what I call the 3-2-1 Backup Plan and I stick to it religiously. I don’t get greedy for speed or lazy and put it off to tomorrow.
- At least 3 different backups. I use a cloud-based program, a 4TB external hard drive, and a 2TB external solid state drive.
- Use 2 different media for backup. Never have all your backups on just solid state drives.
- At least 1 backup must be offsite, away from the original source. The cloud qualifies as the most convenient method.
